What are your expectations for this class and for yourself in this class? What do you think of when you hear the word movie? What is your favorite movie? Why? Required: 2 full, well-developed paragraphs.
Over the next two years studying IB Film, I cannot wait to learn more about such an intriguing medium. Movies are a very large part of my life and this class is a perfect opportunity for me to not only learn more about the movies I have already seen, but expand my film taste palate. Though it will take much work, I am excited and ready to learn to analyze and create film. To me, movies are pieces of art that pull you into another place. I think my preexisting love for older films will help me in a class that I know will cover movies from an earlier era. My favorite film is Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey". The way it tracks humankind's travels into the unknown is original and visually stunning, as the special effects were and still are a major accomplishment in film. Kubrick makes viewers question our reliance in modern technology and how much it may control our lives (even more close to reality now in 2015). The breathtaking visuals transport you right next to Bowman as he goes further into the unknown of space. Paired with one of the most iconic scores in cinema, "2001: A Space Odyssey" never fails to mesmerize.
Personally, I expect this class to be not only challenging, but fun. I've been waiting to take IB Film as long as I have known it was a course option. It has been my dream for many years to become a director, and I hope that this class will take me on the right path. I hope to not limit myself this year, and work as hard as possible. I want to achieve as much as I can. I think of an art form when I hear the word "movie." It makes me happy to watch and analyze films. I don't particularly have a favorite movie, but when asked this question, I usually say Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb." I say this because, one, my favorite actor of all time and one of my idols, Peter Sellers, plays multiple roles in the movie. Two, the movie has all the right elements. The story is bizarre in a way that makes sense. It's intelligently funny, and has beautiful cinematography. Stanley Kubrick is also my favorite director, my main idol, and the reason I aspire to be a filmmaker. Overall, I'm incredibly excited for this class and expect it will build the foundation for me to achieve my dreams.
My expectation for this class is that it will challenge me and expand my knowledge of film making. I am excited to learn the language of cinematography and the production process, and expect for myself to become fluent in those things. For along time I have been interested in making my own films and videos, but never found the resources to learn it until I came to City Honors. I think of my childhood and family when I hear the word movie because as far back as I can remember, my family has been engaged in watching and talking about movies. I also think of a piece of artwork that takes a lot of time, passion, and effort. I would say my favorite movie is Jason Reitman's "Juno" because although when I discovered it at a young age and did not understand it, I was always moved by the story line. I am looking forward to learning how to analyze films through the eyes of a director.
By Taking this course, I expect to learn a lot more film making terms and techniques that I am not familiar with. I know this class is very demanding, but I know that it will be worth it in the long run because I do expect to be an active member of the film/entertainment industry. I also expect this class to prepare me pretty well for college, considering I do plan on majoring in Film Making. The expectations I have for myself in this class are that my taste in films are going to broaden and I'll have a better appreciation for many different genres of films. I also expect for me to be a little familiar with the editing program, Final Cut Pro, because prior to signing up for this course, I've had to take film classes in order to do my personal project last year, a 5-minute documentary. When I hear the word "movie", I usually think of the literal definition of the word; as in "a series of moving pictures". But I also think about how joy movies give me and how much I've always loved to entertain whether it be in front or behind the camera. My absolute favorite thing to do is to go to the movie theater, ever since I was little, it was always my favorite thing to do. One of my favorite movies is Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber's "The Butterfly Effect" (2004) because I used to watch it a lot when I was little and I've always found it especially fascinating. But, watching it now, I can follow the story line and understand was is happening in the scenes a little bit better. I especially love this film because I am a big fan science fiction movies with alternate realities. And this alternate reality that the main character, Evan, is in, allows him to travel back in time to all of the difficult times he's blacked out of his childhood to change the future, ultimately starting a vicious cycle of time traveling and an attempt to fix everything.
I originally decided to take this film class so I could have could have the opportunity to explore a more creative subject. I had signed up for IB Business on the advice of older friends, but I soon realized that I would rather take a class that I'm interested in, regardless of the workload. I expect this class to be a challenge, especially because I'm very new to the process of analyzing movies. However, I don't think I will mind the difficulty level because I'm very lucky to have the option to take a course that teaches me a skill unlike the ones I learn in most other classes. I think of movies as a unique form of art, because they combine many different aspects of creativity. Filmmakers don't just have to think of the storyline or the cinematography and editing, but also how all these details come together to form a coherent and engaging movie. As I previously mentioned, I am not a self taught film analyst, and most of my favorite movies are ones I was introduced to as a child. The one movie that I have always enjoyed and been impressed by is The Parent Trap. I like the original version as well as the 1998 remake for a number of reasons. The plot, although not necessarily original, is timeless and all-around entertaining. Beyond that, the editing techniques to create the illusion of twins seems particularly clever and interesting. Before I learned the names of the actresses in the two films, I was completely fooled into believing that the roles were played by actual twins. Once I realized the truth, I had to watch a separate documentary explaining the process of filming and editing because I could not believe how seamless and undetectable the illusion was. Although I generally like the two versions equally, I think that the remake does a better job creating the impression of twins, so I guess I would consider that one to be my favorite. The film holds a lot of nostalgia for me personally, because I loved it when I was much younger, and as I grow older I've retained my interest in it. This movie in particular helped to spark my interest in the process of how movies are made, and the amount of work that goes into them.
From this class, I expect to achieve a higher level of understanding how films are created. As of now, I don't anticipate majoring in the film department, but after reading the textbook, Looking At Movies, over the summer, I am greatly fascinated by how everything in a film has a meaning. Before reading, I carried a common notion that such things as ambient sounds were recorded during production, rather than edited in later during postproduction. From this, I gained the insight that there are no such things as unintentional sights or sounds in a well-crafted film. I hope to be able to identify the meanings behind each choice the film producers make in order to heighten my understanding and overall appreciation of a piece of film. I also hope to be able to create the same level of depth when I, in my group, film my own movie. I understand that this class is going to require a lot of work, and I am willing to apply myself to this course simply because of my fascination with movies and desire to learn how to interpret them.
When I hear the word "movie", I think of moving pictures with sounds and colors onscreen that convey a story through its narrative. When well-planned, movies can bring attention to real-world issues and reveal truths about our own day-to-day lives, not to mention providing entertainment for their audiences. With that being said, my favorite movie is difficult to discern. In terms of sheer enjoyment, my favorite is Suicide Squad for no other reason but that its gripping narrative enthralled me, as well as its special effects. X-Men: First Class is another movie whose narrative I found equally entertaining, but for which I also loved the character development. Avatar ("the blue people" one) had stunning CGI cinematography; the live animation techniques they employed to create that movie showed in the outstanding visual and auditory end product. Furthermore, the themes of colonialism and of deforestation and its effects were straightforward and resounding. Lastly, I would also put Fantastic Mr. Fox among my favorites particularly because of the stop-motion animation. I have much respect for the creators who underwent this tedious process to produce a film of narrative and cinematic merit.
I have always been fascinated by storytelling, particularly within the contexts of the individual mediums in which said stories are being told. Movies are no exception; film was the first medium in which I began to consider beyond what was presented directly on the screen. I'd wonder how it all worked, and why only some of it worked for me. Why does this edit make me laugh, and that one make me tense? How does a scene work to convey theme and further the plot? Why did they choose to make the final product be the way it is? It all fascinated me, and I would try to somewhat analyse film as I watched it. I crossed the threshold from a passive participant to an active observer; I craved to comprehend what I had taken for granted. With this course, I hope to understand the craft of moviemaking even further from a new lens, and, hopefully, to be able to use that knowledge for my achievement. Movies are a medium totally advanced from any type before, capable of taking both auditory and visual senses and meticulously modifying them to further the story being told. They mark a major step in our societal evolution, and I truly believe they are a hallmark in human entertainment and technology. I want to be able to study them so that I may find my own capabilities, and to use them to truly achieve. As of writing this, my favorite film is "The Princess Bride" (1987). Since its inception it's become a sort of cult classic, and I can see why. It's legitimately charming as both a subversion and a celebration of classical fairy tales, it's both genuinely witty and broad in its humor for anyone to enjoy it, and it has some of the most memorable scenes in film history. Even without seeing the film, you'd be hard pressed to find someone unfamiliar with Inigo Montoya's famous "You killed my father, prepare to die" scene, or Wallace Shawn's Vizzini's infamous cry "Inconceivable!" or even Billy Crystal's "He's only mostly dead". I loved the film as a kid and I continue to love it even now. Like every truly good fiction, you can go back to it repeatedly and still find new nuances or jokes you hadn't before.
(I wrote this 4 times and it kept on being deleted when I tried to publish. I don't know why this one works suddenly.)
From an early age I have always been extremely fascinated in storytelling. Whether it be in the form of literature or films, watching a story play out and characters develop has never ceased to interest me. I have always wanted to pursue a career in either the film industry or as a writer, flitting between wanting to be an actor, or a director, or a production assistant, a screenwriter, or simply an author and I believe this class will help me decide what path I would like to begin after high school. As someone with not the greatest track record when it comes to challenges in school I also hope the mixture of personal interest and demanding course load will help me become a better student. As a bonus I also expect to expand my taste in different genres and categories of movies and to overcome some of the biases I have against certain types of film. While learning another side to filmmaking which I have yet to explore and would not have the opportunity to do outside of this class.
When I hear the word “movie” I think of a much different experience than when I hear the word “film”. By definition there is no difference between the two words but over time I have seperated them to distinguish different types of movies. When I think of a movie I think of blockbusters. I think of Adam Sandler and formulaic remixes of the same concept. That may sound pretentious and negative but I don’t mean it that way at all. I enjoy those movies immensely and frequently watch them and often prefer them to other types. However, when I think of the word film I think of a story being told. Original, deep, complex characters and a plot that draws you in for more than the fact it is entertaining. Currently my favorite movie is Short Term 12 with a close second of Room. Both star Brie Larson and I completely fell in love with them over the summer. Mostly for the fact that they let me see into a reality I had never considered before. On top of that they both featured extremely complex characters with flaws and backstories that made the experience so much more real. And although I have no experience in analyzing film, thinking back it is evident someone put a great deal of effort and care into actually filming the movie. Both exemplify something I want to be a part of in the future.
I never really thought that I would be interested in film and the process behind actually filming actors and creating scenes that flow together. I would have thought that I'd rather be interested in acting and putting on different characters instead of being the brains behind how the film turns out and what transitions need to be made to make the film flow. As I grew up I found an interest in writing that I never knew I had before and now I am passionate about writing my own screenplays and creating stories which turn into films for entertainment. My expectation for this class is to be able to take my passion and create something that I can use to express my ideas and creativity to anyone watching and to increase my knowledge of the film industry. I also hope to get better time management skills from this class and the ability to not waste my time and be more productive throughout the day.
When I hear the word movie I think of a form of entertainment that allows the one watching to travel into another alternate world which they are not in at the moment. It allows one to feel the emotions and sentiments going through another character's life that allows one to empathize more with people in real life. Given this, my favorite movie is The Notebook. That is my favorite movie because I like the storyline and the plot of it. I really enjoy romance movies and I like the way they edited it since it flowed so well I could hardly tell when the cuts were. The cinematography of it was something I enjoyed as well. The reason why I like this movie isn't really film related and focused on the processes. Its focused on the acting of the actors and storyline of the movie. I am not really an active movie watcher so I can't pick up on the things that filmmakers and directors do.
In taking IB Film I expect to get a more full and "hands-on" approach in experiencing the art of film and filmmaking. I find film very interesting and I would love to learn about film history and how exactly movies are designed and created. I expect myself to be more interested in film and although this course will be extremely hard I feel like I would enjoy. I really like everything about movies from watching them to how they are made. When I hear the word movie I think of a story thats told through video and sound. I personally dont have any favorite movies but I have favorite scenes from different movies. My favorite scene is the tracking shot from Children of Men.
Film is something which I have been interested in throughout my life. Throughout my time in IB Film, I expect to increase my knowledge of how movies are made and what invisible techniques filmmakers use to convey their message to the audience. I expect myself to be determined and focused through these next two years so I am able to pursue a career related to film and media studies. When I hear the word "movie," I simply think of a basic form of entertainment. However, when I really think about it, movies are a unique form of expression that greatly effect how people see each other and the world around them. As of now, my favorite film is "Where to Invade Next", Directed and Produced by Michael Moore. It is a documentary about how other countries, such as Italy, France, Portugal, and more, deal with economic and social woes also experienced by the United States. I really liked this film because Michael Moore was able to convey a very important message in a funny, light-hearted documentary that I enjoyed from start to finish.
In this course, I expect to be met with rigorous challenges and fascinating learning material. I have always enjoyed films, and was often taken away into rich and complex worlds when watching my favorite films. It excites me to know that I will be learning about the techniques that filmmakers use to create such vibrant worlds and stories, and even creating my own. The producing of films is what most excites me. I am a musician who has recorded and edited my own EP, and continues to record as a hobby. With this experience, I hope to bring to the table rudimentary skills in sound production, sound editing, and perhaps even film editing if it is similar to sound editing. I hope that these skills, in addition to my affinity for films, will allow me to thrive in this class.
When I hear the word “movie”, I think of a visual art form that intends to entertain an audience in a manner that no other art form truly can. This is because film is an amalgamation of virtually all secular art forms, including, but not limited to, visual art, both moving and still, literature through the dialogue and narration, and sonic devices that a filmmaker may use, from the most dramatic orchestral piece to the simplest sound effect. My favorite film is Joel and Ethan Coen’s The Big Lebowski. The Big Lebowski is a massively entertaining film with sharp dialogue, a brilliantly messy story, and intriguing characters, both major and minor. This film i one that I have watched countless times, and it still manages to be entertaining each time I watch it.
My expectations for this class is to further progress my knowledge of film to be applied in, hopefully, a position in the industry. My personal expectations for this class is to apply anything I learn from the perspective off all different fields and content creators and use that as a base for building a unique style of film. To describe the word movie is simply an impossible question because the word is fluent to every language, age, race, mental state, etc. If I could describe it in a simple way it would be that it is a window into a universe that is infinitely created by anyone. Favorite movie, much like a favorite song, can really only be better described through favorite movie in a specific type of genre. If i had to pick one of my favorite movies it would have to be Alfonso CuarĂ³n's Children of Men (2006). When I first saw it I instantly fell in love with the amazing cinematography, soundtrack, script, and overall premise of the movie. My favorite aspect of the cinematography are the long "one-take" scenes.
In this class I expect myself to meet the challenges of the work load and the content. I joined because I am highly interested in the subject material, and want to take this chance to garner some knowledge and put it under my belt. When I hear the word "movie", I think of any sort of full-length picture, live, animated, or otherwise. I find it really hard to try and think of a favorite movie, but mine would probably, as of right now, be Deadpool or The Producers. Deadpool because of the action and humor, or The Producers for the plot and humor
Over the next two years studying IB Film, I cannot wait to learn more about such an intriguing medium. Movies are a very large part of my life and this class is a perfect opportunity for me to not only learn more about the movies I have already seen, but expand my film taste palate. I find film very interesting and I would love to learn about film history and how exactly movies are designed and created. I expect myself to be more interested in film and although this course will be extremely hard I feel like I would enjoy. I really like everything about movies from watching them to how they are made.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the word movie I think of a story thats told through video and sound.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the word "movie," I simply think of a basic form of entertainment.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the word “movie”, I think of a visual art form that intends to entertain an audience in a manner that no other art form truly can.
ReplyDeleteFavorite movie, much like a favorite song, can really only be better described through favorite movie in a specific type of genre.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear the word "movie", I think of any sort of full-length picture, live, animated, or otherwise. I find it really hard to try and think of a favorite movie, but mine would probably, as of right now, be Deadpool or The Producers. Deadpool because of the action and humor, or The Producers for the plot and humor
